For anyone familiar with the teenage mystery series, having only three surprising moments may seem tame for the show. Based on the YA novel series by Sara Shepard for Alloy Entertainment and HarperCollins, “Pretty Little Liars” follows the exploits of four classmates at Rosewood High as they deal with a mysterious, unseen character named “A” — whom the girls suspect is their friend Alison, the former queen bee of their group who disappeared a year ago. Fairly provocative for the YA set, the show has featured a high school student sleeping with an adult teacher, girl-on-girl kisses, a blind girl seeking revenge, and if the series holds true to the books, an incestuous relationship isn’t far behind.

“The ABC Family logo is a bit of a misnomer,” said King during a recent phone interview. “They’ve certainly let us be edgy and dark, perhaps even more so that if we were on regular ABC. They’ve never really come down on us.” The only subjects the network is touchy about, King said, was language and drug use. “We’ve never been allowed to show smoking, which I think stems from the Disney brand,” she said. “And if somebody does break the law or do something dark, they like to see consequences. And we’re fine with that.”

King is particularly excited for fans to see the show’s season finale. “It’s very big, very cinematic, and it reminds me of the pilot,” she said. “There’s naturally a huge twist and a big concession.” Like many other showrunners these days, she’ll be paying attention to Twitter when the episode airs on both the East and West Coasts and trying to tweet back at fans and viewers. “Twitter is a great barometer and it happens to be an organic fit for us, because our audience does use social media so extensively in their lives,” she said. “When we have an exciting episode and the show becomes a trending topic, I find it does reflect a higher number of people are watching.”

Already renewed for a second season, the show — which first premiered last summer and saw its initial order of 10 episodes upped to 22 — will have six full-time writers for the coming year, most of them fairly senior writers, says King. “I love that our room has an experienced voice; you don’t have to be 18 or 20 to find these young teen genre voices,” she said. “[Writer] Joe Dougherty has been around since the wagon train, but he writes the best teen voices.”

And while there are currently eight book in the “Pretty Little Liars” series, with four more on the way thanks to the success of the TV show, King says that she’s tentatively planned out the plot for a five-season series. “We operate as if there’s going to be five seasons,” she said. “For a mystery, it’s not fair to the writers to not know.”

The spring finale of “Pretty Little Liars’ airs tonight at 8 p.m. EST on ABC Family.

In a twist on the holiday classic A Christmas Carol, the ABC Family made-for-TV movie follows big shot Hollywood publicist Sloane Spencer, played by Christina Milian, who is stalked by the ghost of her recently deceased client Caitlin Quinn (Benson). Caitlin takes Sloane to meet her ex-boyfriends of past, present and future, and ultimately guides her to find her true love.

So where did Benson find inspiration to play a character she describes as a “movie star, wild-child, alcoholic”? Not from real-life fixtures in the tabloids, but from the films American Beauty and Legally Blonde. Taking some notes from Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods, Benson says her favorite thing about shooting the film was getting to try out her comedic chops.

“[Quinn] always had the best lines — she’s so sarcastic — and it was a lot of comedy which I haven’t really touched on,” she says. “That was a little bit nerve racking, but so much fun.”
