On Pretty Little Liars, she’s haunted by the death of her best friend Alison; in Ashley Benson’s upcoming movie Christmas Cupid, she’s the dead one.

In a twist on the holiday classic A Christmas Carol, the ABC Family made-for-TV movie follows big shot Hollywood publicist Sloane Spencer, played by Christina Milian, who is stalked by the ghost of her recently deceased client Caitlin Quinn (Benson). Caitlin takes Sloane to meet her ex-boyfriends of past, present and future, and ultimately guides her to find her true love.

So where did Benson find inspiration to play a character she describes as a “movie star, wild-child, alcoholic”? Not from real-life fixtures in the tabloids, but from the films American Beauty and Legally Blonde. Taking some notes from Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods, Benson says her favorite thing about shooting the film was getting to try out her comedic chops.

“[Quinn] always had the best lines — she’s so sarcastic — and it was a lot of comedy which I haven’t really touched on,” she says. “That was a little bit nerve racking, but so much fun.”

Ashley Benson is gearing up for Monday’s premiere of Pretty Little Liars and handing out some show secrets, plus some secrets of her own.

Check out the secrets that the 21-year-old actress spilled:

She guarantees that Hanna isn’t dead. “Hanna’s not dead. You’re definitely going to see a character change in Hanna in the next couple of episodes. She grows a lot from this whole experience, and you’ll see her and her mom dealing with their financial situations. And then her love triangle will kind of work itself in there.”

She crushed on Hanson and Jonathan Taylor Thomas: “I also had a crush on Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Every time he would come on the screen, he was like my boyfriend. I was such a nerd like that.”

She and her PLL costars have fashion ESP. “We definitely end up wearing the same thing sometimes. We’ll come to set and we’ll all have the same coat on, or we all have the same jeans or dress. It’s so funny. So, we all have the same kind of style, but each of us add something different.”

She dressed up for Harry Potter! “I went to see the new movie on opening night and dressed up. I just wore a cape and glasses and tights and boots. I was like, why not? We were working really late and some of my friends from Glee went and we all dressed up and everybody else was dressed up, so I didn’t like feel out of place. It was fun!”

Pretty Little Liars premieres Monday, January 3rd @ 9PM ET/PT on ABC Family.

Ashley Benson has hinted that Pretty Little Liars will be “scarier” when it returns for the second half of its first season.

Speaking to reporters, Benson explained that the first episode back begins with her character Hanna recovering from her car accident.

“She wakes up and she’s still shaken after the whole thing and she doesn’t really remember what happened,” Benson said. “But she thinks she remembers who she saw by the car and in the woods and who she thinks is A. So she tells the girls and it goes from there, and it’s pretty insane.”

She teased: “She gets a few visitors in the hospital that aren’t supposed to be there. So it’s very creepy.”

Benson added that she is “really excited” to see what fans have to say about the new episodes.

“It’s definitely a lot more creepy and scarier,” she said. “We go on this huge ride. I mean, A just does things that are just so devious and mean and she literally tortures the girls in the next couple of episodes… Hanna gets pushed to her limits.”

Pretty Little Liars returns for new episodes on January 3 at 8/7c on ABC Family. Benson will also star in ABC Family’s movie Christmas Cupid on Sunday, December 12 at 8/7c.
